2017 Music – Year In Review

Luis Fonsi & Daddy Yankee, Ed Sheeran, Post Malone, Migos, Taylor Swift, Cardi B, The Weeknd, Rae Sremmurd, Kendrick Lamar, Bruno Mars, and DJ Khaled all had #1 hits in the year 2017.

2017 started with The Weeknd, Rae Sremmurd, and Migos at the #1 spot. The Weeknd with his hit Starboy (featuring Daft Punk), Rae Sremmurd with their hit Black Beatles (featuring Gucci Mane), and Migos with their hit Bad And Boujee (featuring Lil Uzi Vert) hit #1 in January. Then at the very end of January, Ed Sheeran took the #1 spot with his hit Shape of You, which remained #1 for 13 weeks straight on the Hot 100 Chart. Later on coming back at the very end of the year with his #1 hit, Perfect.

In May, Kendrick Lamar’s Humble., Bruno Mars’ That’s What I Like, and DJ Khaled’s I’m The One (featuring Justin Bieber, Quavo, Chance The Rapper & Lil Wayne) hit #1 on the Top 100. At the very end of May Luis Fonsi & Daddy Yankee took the #1 spot with their hit Despacito (featuring Justin Bieber) and stayed at #1 for 16 weeks straight. Despacito ruled the entire summer all the way to the beginning of the fall. Wow!

Taylor Swift’s controversial hit, Look What You Made Me Do, hit #1 for 3 weeks straight in September. Then in October, Cardi B took the #1 spot for 3 weeks with Bodak Yellow. Post Malone had the #1 spot for 8 weeks straight at the end of October with Rockstar featuring 21 Savage.

#MannequinChallenge

Rae Sremmurd’s Black Beatles track hit #1 on the Hot 100 because their song became the unofficial soundtrack of the viral phenomenon called the Mannequin Challenge. It all started when a bunch of Florida high school students posted a video where they were all posed frozen like mannequins. When it all started, there was no music associated with the challenge. Somehow as more and more people started posting #MannequinnChallenge videos of themselves, the “Black Beatles” song started being used. The #MannequinChallenge went viral and even Paul McCartney himself posted a video doing the Mannequinu Challenge. When we play this song at parties, kids and teens will stop and pose for the entire song.

Chester Bennington – Lead Singer of Linkin Park

I grew up listening to Linkin Park. Chester Bennington died at the age of 41 on July 20, 2017. The news was sad, but true. He committed suicide at his home in Palos Verdes Estates, California by hanging. Chester filmed an episode of Carpool Karaoke on July 14, six days before his death. Chester’s family allowed this episode to be aired in memory of Chester Bennington.
