Classic dance sounds of the 1970s & 1980s was made popular in New York City dance clubs like The FunHouse, Paradise Garage, The Loft, and Studio 54. Disco music from the 1970’s influenced the dance classics sound of the 80’s. Many of these tracks can be categorized in funk, soul, R&B, boogie, breakbeat, electro hip-hop, reggae, afrobeat, dance-punk, and new wave. The discotheque, Paradise Garage, gave rise to the descriptive terms like “New York house,” “garage classic,” and “garage style.” Musical artists like Taana Gardner, Raw Silk, and Peech Boys were known for “The Garage Sound.” Some of the leading disk jockeys during this era were Larry Levan, Frankie Knuckles, Jellybean and Lil’ Louie Vega.
As a true lover of classic dance music, I’d like to share my personal favorites.
